OUR Beginning

The story of Booted and Rooted Ltd, started out in 2010 when  founders Michael Groce, and Philip Davies, met at a mutual friends house, having known each other in  passing, over a period of years this chance meeting, a concerned observation of the current issues of the day,  manifested quite rapidly in to action,  leading them both on a journey that would eventually ignite the development Booted and Rooted and what it is today.

Most of Booted and Rooted Ltd Services are delivered through our centre in Lambeth – we also invite other service providers to deliver programmes form here so that we can deliver a collaborative solution to people needs. However we also deliver engagement and delivery programmes outside of the office to market our delivery to a wider audience:

  • Our IAG manager  delivers IAG sessions within JCP offices centred on Lambeth with some delivery in Peckham

  • Staff deliver sessions twice a week from the probation Hub based in Stockwell

  • We work with Lambeth Youth Co-op to deliver Apprenticeship awareness events at youth locations

  • Have a relationship with Evelyn Grace School and assisted with delivery of their Careers Cluster programme

  • Hosted employment events at Pop – Brixton introducing job seekers to employers resident there

  • Worked with housing associations – Mosaic, metropolitan to deliver employment events.

  • Receive referrals directly from Lambeth Housing Management regarding their residents requiring assistance.

  • Links to local Children’s Centres – Stockwell and Jessops Children centre

  • Job search support for people using the ‘Community shop’.

Booted and Rooted Ltd delivers a programme of support that is designed by the people attending our services. Built around a core programme covering confidence, motivation and communication skills individuals will work with an advisor to pick modules from a menu that best reflects their current situation. Skills and support modules will be available to assist clients overcome the barriers identified within their initial IAG interview.


Clients recruited onto the programme can undertake Psychological Fitness Workshops facilitated by BAR. The workshop will be person-centered reflecting the needs, barriers and issues of those attending and will enable each trainee to become more self-aware and better able to recognise the source of any self-limiting beliefs and attitudes. They will develop stronger commitment and self-confidence and their relationships will improve as they learn how to connect better with others. They will be able to focus more, be more resilient and better able to resist setbacks.


When training activity is complete all clients are enrolled, by Booted and Rooted Ltd Recruitment, where they have continued job application support, such as CV support and interview prep, and access to the latest vacancies.


However we believe that no single organisation can consistently deliver solutions to the complex problems faced by people out of work. Working in partnership adds value to delivery by increasing the range of services available to learners. It can also more readily adjust to the unique requirements of people’s individual circumstances. Booted and Rooted Ltd therefore works with a varied range of delivery partners who are able to meet the needs identified by initial IAG sessions.


  • Skills courses are delivered by SFA funded organisations such as Lambeth College, City Lit and MI Compute Solutions.

  • Substance abuse support and advice is delivered by The Harbour

  • Homelessness, housing advice and support for those with more chaotic lifestyles is delivered through Thames Reach

  • Debt and benefits advice by Money Champions

  • Distance learning through The Digital College

  • Lone Parent support from Women like us delivered through local Children Centre partners

  • Mental health advice and support through partners at the Lambeth Living well partnership

  • Ex offender mentor training and support through Reform Foundation

Into-work and in-work support for your specific target groups

Whilst making the transition into work, and to support them whilst they are there, we offer an ‘in-work’ benefits calculation with help applying for tax credits and housing benefit where appropriate. One of our partner organisations ‘Money-champions’ helps people who have a changing financial situation and assists with setting monthly budgets appropriate to their new status.


In addition to support will be offered to learners in the form of a ‘personal-fund’ that looks to overcome financial barriers to starting work. This may include interview clothing, transportation costs, licensing and PPE.

Employer engagement, key employers that you will work with and how you work with existing provision


BAR is a collaborative delivery centre with links to the main stakeholders within Lambeth. On the premises we have hosted advisors from the Jobcentre and Lambeth Working that enables us to have a co-operative approach to sourcing suitable employers and vacancies for BAR projects. Close liaison with Lambeth working – hosting their Construction Job Club – means we have sight of vacancies, and apprenticeships, generated by them; hosting awareness and open days for vacancies and training they have available.

  • BAR is also a recruitment and Training Partner for POP Brixton so we will also advertise the programme to the 20+ companies based there

  • Through Booted and Rooted Ltd Recruitment we actively market people to organisations that have vacancies advertised as well as well as speculative approaches to organisations

  • We have also been working with Brixton BID. The BID represents a wide number of employers in Brixton Town centre whom are keen to employ people from the local area

  • In addition we work with other private sector organisations including Employment agencies, such as Step Ahead. Step Ahead is an apprenticeship Training Agency and we will

  • Recently we have run a recruitment campaign for Sixth sense – an organisation that works within the hospitality industry – and have placed 22 people in a variety of positions through this organisation
